How to Digitize a Cased Daguerreotype Safely
By ImgHeal · Updated
Plan a camera capture for a highly reflective cased image without touching its protected surface.
Plan the capture
A daguerreotype is a reflective, delicate object often protected behind glass in a case. Do not remove it from the case or clean the surface for a web upload. If the housing is damaged, consult a specialist before opening or repositioning it.
Make a complete digital master
Use a camera rather than pressing the case onto a flatbed scanner. Stabilize the open case, keep the lens parallel, and use dark cards and angled soft light to control reflections. Capture the case, mat, and image together before making closer views.
Prepare the working copy
Retain multiple captures because one angle may reveal details another hides. Any restoration should be applied to a copy, and its result should be compared with the least-reflective source rather than treated as recovered evidence.
Check before you finish
- Keep the object inside its case.
- Control reflections with angle and soft light.
- Retain several source views.

Try a restoration on a copy of your photo
Keep the original scan. Upload a separate digital copy, review ImgHeal’s generated result, and decide whether it suits your needs.
