How to Review Possible Duplicate Photo Files

By ImgHeal · Updated

Distinguish identical files, alternate scans, and different edits before removing copies.

Group candidates without deleting

Collect suspected duplicates into a review list using filenames, dimensions, and visual similarity. Two matching scenes may come from different prints or scans. Treat those as candidates rather than proof that one file is redundant.

Compare information and context

Inspect borders, inscriptions, crop, damage, and metadata. One version may retain a detail missing from another. Record relationships such as alternate scan or restored derivative instead of collapsing them into a single duplicate label.

Keep recovery available

Back up the collection and use a reversible review process for clearly redundant files. Verify that captions and indexes still reference a retained source. Do not discard the only unedited copy simply because an enhanced version appears sharper.

Check before you finish

  • Distinguish alternate sources from identical copies.
  • Retain original context and recovery options.

Try a restoration on a copy of your photo

Keep the original scan. Upload a separate digital copy, review ImgHeal’s generated result, and decide whether it suits your needs.
