How to Copy Photos Printed on Textured Paper

By ImgHeal · Updated

Recognize paper texture in a capture before trying to remove it as damage.

Inspect the physical pattern

Under safe viewing conditions, compare the print surface with the capture. A regular embossed pattern can create highlights and shadows that resemble noise. Save a complete reference so the paper's appearance is documented before you make a smoother derivative.

Test lighting and capture settings

For a camera copy, try softer illumination from a different direction without changing the print. Compare small sample regions at the same scale. Choose the capture that retains facial and clothing detail with the least distracting surface pattern.

Avoid blanket smoothing

Texture reduction may also erase hair, fabric, and photographic grain. Test a limited adjustment on a copy and review several surfaces. Accept some paper texture when removing it would produce a flat or reconstructed appearance across important details.

Check before you finish

  • Distinguish paper texture from image noise.
  • Check detailed regions after smoothing.
