How to Digitize a Photo in a Card Mount
By ImgHeal · Updated
Capture the image and its mount as connected records before making a presentation crop.
Include the full mount
Photograph the card edges, studio imprint, and any visible notes. The mount may explain where a portrait was made or how it was presented. Do not detach the print to reveal more image area; the attachment may be fragile or permanent.
Make a separate image crop
Create a viewing crop from the complete capture or a closer safe capture. Keep the portrait aligned without assuming the mount itself is perfectly square. Check that a decorative opening has not hidden part of the original composition.
Link the two records
Give the mount view and portrait crop the same identifier with different suffixes. Transcribe studio details into your index, marking uncertain letters. A restored portrait is easier to understand later when its physical context remains available.
Check before you finish
- Capture studio marks and mount edges.
- Connect the crop to its complete mount view.
