How to Digitize a Photographic Contact Sheet
By ImgHeal · Updated
Preserve frame order and markings while making individual images easier to browse.
Capture the whole sheet
Keep frame numbers, handwritten selections, and borders in the master. These details can connect images to negatives or explain a photographer's choices. Do not start by cropping away the sequence markers.
Create linked frame crops
Give each derivative a sheet identifier and visible frame number. If numbering is missing, describe position consistently, such as row-02-column-04. Avoid renumbering the sequence each time you sort by subject or quality.
Review tiny details cautiously
A contact image may provide too few pixels for a reliable enlarged face. Look for an original negative or larger print when available. Label enhanced crops as derivatives and keep the full sheet accessible for anyone reviewing sequence or provenance.
Check before you finish
- Preserve frame numbers and selection marks.
- Link each crop to its sheet position.
