How to Keep Content-Aware Fill from Borrowing a Face or Caption
By ImgHeal · Updated
Use the separate editor's sampling controls to exclude faces, lettering, and unrelated textures from a background fill. Inspect the selected repair region and the allowed source region separately. Content-Aware Fill synthesizes a patch from available image information; a clean result is not proof of the exact background that originally occupied a damaged area.

Define the repair region narrowly
Select the actual defect on a duplicate project and leave important subject edges visible for comparison. A broad selection can invite replacement of intact content alongside the damage. Record which part is missing and which still survives. Do not use a background cleanup as an unrecorded opportunity to remove a person, object, or caption that belongs to the scene simply because those elements complicate the automatic fill.
Inspect the allowed sampling area
In software that offers a Content-Aware Fill workspace, use its documented sampling brush or custom-source controls. Adobe describes refining sampling regions separately from the fill selection. Exclude unrelated faces, repeating text, borders, and strong directional patterns unless they genuinely suit the repair. Preview more than one possible source restriction when necessary. An automatic default can choose visually similar material that makes no sense in the photograph's structure or historical context.
Verify the new patch independently
Output to a separate layer where supported and toggle the result against the source. Check repeated motifs, seams, geometry, and any changed border. Review at normal display size as well as close up. Keep the original capture and document substantial reconstructed regions. If no suitable source texture exists, preserve some visible damage or make a clearly labeled creative version rather than using an implausibly clean fill as evidence of recovered scene content.

Questions about this restoration task
Does excluding a subject guarantee a historically correct fill?
No. It limits which source pixels inform the operation. The replacement still needs visual review and may remain a reconstruction rather than a recovery of the original scene.
