Is a Synced Photo Folder the Same as a Backup?
By ImgHeal · Updated
Check recovery behavior before relying on synchronization as your only archive protection.
Understand propagation
A sync service keeps selected locations aligned, which may also propagate accidental edits or deletions. Check the service's current version-history and recovery behavior. Do not assume a second synced device is an independent historical copy of your collection.
Check local availability
Some folders show placeholders for files stored remotely. Verify that full-resolution masters are actually available where you expect them. Open a representative file from the intended backup source before making an offline archive or moving devices.
Add a recoverable independent copy
Keep another copy that fits your archive's needs and test restoration from it. Record which location is the working archive and which is a recovery source. Include indexes and captions, not just the pictures shown in a gallery app.
Check before you finish
- Check deletion and version recovery behavior.
- Verify full files rather than cloud placeholders.
