How to Review Cracked Photo Emulsion in a Scan
By ImgHeal · Updated
Separate fine surface cracking from real picture detail before making a cleaner digital viewing copy.
Protect the original first
A web image cannot show whether cracking is stable, lifting, or likely to flake. Do not bend the photograph or apply coatings. Capture the surface with even light and, when safe, one angled-light reference that makes the crack pattern visible.
Record the visible damage
Keep the condition reference and edit a duplicate. Work in small regions so eyes, hair, fabric, and handwriting are not smoothed away with the cracks. Where the image layer is missing, any filled detail is a reconstruction.
Review the digital result
Compare the result at normal viewing size and high magnification. Repeated texture, softened expressions, and broken straight lines are signs that the cleanup needs restraint. Preserve the full source scan.
Check before you finish
- Do not flex the original.
- Keep an angled-light condition reference.
- Review fine image detail after cleanup.
